How can I be granted refugee status in the USA?
I was born in 1962 in Egypt. I came to the USA when I was 19, almost 20. I was married to a Saudi Arabian man when I was 13 and left him when I was 18 (I never divorced him, I just literally walked out the door). He was very abusive so I went back to Egypt to see if my family would help me but they refused because I am not Muslim and on top of that, my mother is Israeli. There is no help for non-Muslim or Israeli people in Egypt. Especially women and even more so, ones that have left their husband. I have virtually no information on my background. I know my mother was American and that my father became a British citizen. I grew up with my grandparents. My uncle was the only one in my family who would help me (he helped me get into the USA but I have no papers so I am technically here illegally) and he was going to help me with papers but he died before he could. I cannot read Arabic. I never went to school. I don't even know how to write my name in Arabic. I have tried to contact my family but they have moved and refuse to help me. I have been in the USA over 30 years, just basically living under the radar because I'm so afraid of being deported. I can't go back to Egypt. My grandfather's brother told me that he would kill me if I ever showed up on their doorstep again. I have my parents' names but nothing like social security numbers or anything. I don't even know my mother's birthday (my family didn't like my mother given she was Israeli so they didn't talk much about her). Could I be granted refugee status in the USA? Please help. Thanks.
